In recent years, there have been several well-known studies to determine average penis size.

Most of the studies I found are very close in overall average size, but there are some differences.

I noticed that most of the larger studies were carried out by men measuring themselves, rather than having it done for them by a researcher. The problem with these kinds of surveys is that the way I guy measures himself can vary, so some guys may do it differently than others. Another problem with men reporting their own results is for the tendency to exaggerate their size.

Smaller studies have been done where the researchers measure each penis, rather than relying on guys to do it themselves. This method gives more consistency in reporting, but because of the amount of time involved and other factors, these types of studies use a much smaller sample of men which may or may not be representative of the population as a whole.

But despite these types of problems, it is still worthwhile to see the results of these studies in order to get a good idea of what is considered "average".

More recently, a few condom manufacturers have done some studies into penis size in order to design and provide better fitting products. Most notably are the penis size surveys which were conducted by Durex and Lifestyles Condoms.

The Durex survey was an internet-based survey in which 2,936 men from 27 different countries participated. Men were asked to measure themselves and then report their results online. The bulk of respondents were from the United States and the majority of participants were white. As a result, the study was not a very good representation of different races and ethnic backgrounds.

In any case, the Durex survey found that based on their data, the average erect length is 6.4 inches and average erect girth is 5.2 inches (measured from the thickest point of the penis).

The size of a man's penis (not to mention its shape, but that's a whole different can of worms) will play an important role in your sexual pleasure. If your partner's penis is too small, well, you could have trouble getting aroused -- especially if his member is so minuscule that you have trouble distinguishing it from, say, a probing finger.

The Kinsey study is one of the biggest and most famous penis size studies ever done. It was done in 1948 and involved 3,500 college males. Their findings indicated that the average erect length was 6.21 inches and the average erect girth was 4.85 inches. Flaccid length was found to be 3.89 inches and flaccid girth 3.75 inches on average.

It is important to note that the information used in the survey was based on men who measured themselves. The volunteers simply held a postcard against their penis and marked their length on the card, which was later measured. These methods certainly aren't very scientific, which is why there has been some debate over the accuracy of these results. Plus, only white males were included in the survey and they were all college students, so it did not represent a wide diversity of races or ages.


Another condom manufacturer, Lifestyles Condoms, also ran their own study. In the Spring 2001 in Cancun, Mexico, Lifestyles gathered a total of 301 volunteers (mainly U.S. college students) who were over 18 years old. Each volunteer was measured by a researcher.

The results of the Lifestyles survey found that average penis erect length is 5.87 inches and erect girth is 4.97 inches. Also, according to the survey, 54% of subjects measured between 5.5 inches and 6.3 inches in erect length with 53.3% measuring between 4.72 inches and 5.11 inches in girth.

So what does this tell us? Well, based on this information, it would appear that volunteers may in fact exaggerate their own size when permitted to measure themselves.

In my opinion, considering all of the information above, it would seem that the average erect penis measures between 5.5 and 6.5 inches in length and between 4.5 and 5.5 inches in circumference. And it seems that over 50% of men fall within these ranges.
